I've got this friend, we call him Manny, and while he's at work he sends me random messages all the time. Usually he'll link me to hilarious threads in Off Topic and sometimes he'll send me IMs that will make me hate myself for sitting in front of people in class. It's a link to a PCI video card upgrade for Sun Blade and Sunfire systems. Upon further inspection you'll note that it is a Radeon 7000, click on the Price & Buy link and you'll get a nice $295 :)
I found that funny, so I thought I'd share.
I'm dead tired, going to try this napping thing before class this evening. I've still got more project stuff to work on before I leave tomorrow morning so I better make that nap short. Note that I've been promising myself a nap all day, but something always seems to interrupt it. They really need to switch around when naptimes occur; the whole forcing kids to nap when they don't want to in elementary school but not offering enough sleep opportunities later on in life is just absurd.

Yeah, Sun video card options are insane. I remember assembling a Sun Ultra 60 from parts and having a really hard time with $300 for a Rage II based board.I think Sun, IBM, and Apple really should adopt a single standard for video cards, as both use OpenFirmware in their own UNIX boxes to some extent. At least, the initial OpenFirmware portion should be all compatible - the drivers, once the operating system kernel has been loaded and it is ready to assume control, will have to be different. But at least this will open up Sun and IBM p-series to "inexpensive" Mac video cards as well as provide an incentive to get higher end Sun/IBM 3D cards into a Mac.

They make that sound like it's one heck of a powerful card (but it probably is compared with what those systems ship standard with).I've got a Radeon "7200" PCI, and it's performance in both 2D and 3D is rather lacking, to say the least. It's well past time to upgrade, but I'd rather get one of the new Nikon Coolscan V's instead. :-)
