Video Recording

Video recording of the Honor 20 Pro sees an upgrade thanks to the introduction of OIS, however it’s not all great.

Recording at 60fps at 1080 is very good on the main camera sensor and the OIS is immediately visible. However when switching over to the wide-angle module, things aren’t looking as great as we’re seeing severe detail degradation more apt of a 720p or lower recording, something which is backed up by the resulting bit-rate and file size of the video.

Recording in 4K30 doesn’t see nearly as a big detail hit on the wide-angle lens, however the exposure and saturation is quite different between the two modules, with the wide angle being a lot more washed out.

The most troublesome finding I had when video recording was the fact that the Honor 20 Pro wouldn’t properly change focus when panning between near and far objects, requiring me to manually tap to focus, which is a quite a large deal-breaker and hopefully something that’s will be fixed in the future.

Battery Life

Web Browsing Battery Life 2016 (WiFi)

Battery life on the Honor 20 Pro is great and in line with the Kirin 980 chipset and the 4000mAh battery. The LCD screen is efficient and the H20Pro almost equal to the View20 from earlier in the year.

Apart from the current brouhaha with Android and Google's app store, the key shortcoming of this Honor line remains the absence of a micro-SD slot. Why? It's not like these phones are especially well protected against water and dust. Not that even this requires leaving out removable storage, as a number of IP 67 or 68 certified phones that have it show.

Huawei is likely aiming to swap out all microSD to their proprietary NM card either ways.

Huawei also has a locked bootloader, so you can't install your own custom firmware. My Honor phone olny got updates for 6 months, now i'm stuck old android on a recent phone.

They did the same on the Honor 8. Stayed on top of updates for 6 months and then randomly provided security updates a month or more late for about two years. Stopped that entirely now as of March. And if you didn't have the China/India model phone (like me) it was even worse with six month lag times in North America/Europe.

Hmm. I don't have this issue (in the US) with my Mate SE. I just received the May Android security patch a few days ago.

If you frequently use your phone as a satnav then an LCD screen won't suffer from burn in.
